ReSA System

The ReSA (Residual Stress Analysis) system combines the established ASTM E837 hole drilling method with optical full-field measurements based on Digital Image Correlation (DIC). This is especially suitable for composite material, where conventional strain gauge-based methods may be limited.

The ReSA system is a portable 3D-DIC system for residual strain analysis. Instead of measuring strain locally with bonded strain gauges, ReSA captures the surface displacement field around the drilled hole using high-resolution stereo cameras. These displacement fields are subsequently evaluated to determine residual stresses.

To accommodate the drilling process, the system utilizes a stereo camera arrangement with angles of up to 40°, allowing a high-speed, speed-controlled drilling unit to be positioned centrally between the cameras. The ReSA system includes a micro linear stage for the drilling unit and an additional stage for the Blue-Falcon stereo system and Blue-X-Focus light source, enabling precise adjustment of drilling depth and optical focus. Motorized, computer-controlled stages are available as an option.

ReSA system advantages against strain gauge based methods

ReSA System

  • No corresponding errors:
    • Exact drilling position is not required
    • The material matrix directions can be arbitrary
  • Technical advantages:
    • Full field, high spatial resolution even close to the hole
    • therefore suitable for inhomogenous materials
  • Economical advantages:
    • Low operation cost per measurement
    • Fast and simple preparation of object surface

Strain Gauge & hole drilling

  • Measurement errors due to
    •  misalignment of the drilled hole to the centre of the gauge rosette
    • individual strain gauge application relative to the matrix direction
  • Technical considerations:
    • Single point strain value and averaging across gauge area, therefore not representative for inhomogeneous material
  • Economical aspects:
    • High cost per measurement due to strain gauge
    • Preparation time for applying the strain gauge

Blue-Falcon Cameras

The modular design allows for flexible system expansion, enabling the cameras to be integrated into various system configurations and used across a wide range of applications.
