The application of a stereo camera system with such a pattern enables recording and observation of displacement and distortion in all three dimensions.
Furthermore, the displacement of each surface point at any current value of strain/load can be calculated by utilising image correlation.
Spread/distribution of strain can be calculated and visualized by combining the recorded data e.g. coordinates and displacement values.

Digital image correlation is an analysis method which uses methamatical correlation processes in order to capture digital images of samples exposed to thermal or (static and dynamic) mechanical strains for further interpretation and analysis of possible results.
The pictures taken during the process (spread of intensity) show a change taking place. This is influenced by the raised load/strain. The sample is treated with a random speckles pattern on its surface to accomplish this (please refer to picture on the bottom).
Before changing the value of load a reference picture of the speckles pattern is first taken in order to capture the default condition (left picture). When the process starts the surface undergoes deformation due to the application of load/strain. This leads to distortion and displacement of the default pattern (right and middle picture) which is recorded and captured during the process. Comparism of both conditions shows the exact deformation and displacement paths of the pattern.
